Costume Inspiration: Pounamu is the Maori name for New Zealand jade which is more commonly know as “greenstone” in New Zealand English. Pounamu plays a very important role in Maori culture. It is considered a taonga (treasure) and therefore protected under the Treaty of Waitangi. Pounamu taonga increase in mana (prestige) as they pass from one generation to another. The most prized taonga are those with known histories going back many generations. The different shades of green in this costume represent all the varying colours that Pounamu comes in. The ripples and curls of the fabric represent the flowing South Island rivers that Pounamu is sourced from.
